Uncertain Mechanical Aesthetics
Chan Suk On opens the black box of a camera, deconstructs its internal parts, and creates abstract sculptures with found objects, randomly reassembling and reconfiguring mechanical parts. She disassembles and reassembles the camera’s tightly fastened parts, giving them new life. The camera is no longer merely a tool for documenting the world, but has become an object to be recorded. Like an autopsy, she exposes the camera’s most intimate internal organs to the public—the cold aluminum-magnesium alloy, the rough die-cast surface—like conducting a futuristic experiment. Behind each photograph lies a mechanical soul, telling a story of light and shadow. When an object loses its original function, does it still have value? The artwork exists as an object, displaying its pure beauty, letting loose pieces to breathe. What we see is not the death of the camera, but the rebirth of photography, opening up another way of seeing the world.
Architecture of Light and Shadow
She uses strong light to overlap geometrically shaped mechanical parts, integrating shadows into the objects. The shadow becomes the subject, engaging in a dialogue between the real and the virtual. The shadow exists in the light and disappears in the darkness, becoming eternal in the moment the shutter is pressed. Abstract light and shadow act like a paintbrush, creating a visual puzzle that allows viewers to enter a surreal space and wander the boundaries of abstraction.
