Artist Statement:
It is a “micro-stage" I have constructed at the beginning of 2025. The chair is not a
full-sized Ming-style armchair (Quanyi), but a crafted antique miniature chair. The
distortion of scale carries a playfulness of contemporary art—we cannot actually sit
on it.
The Ming-style armchair embodies the traditional Chinese philosophy of Tian Yuan Di
Fang (Round Heaven, Square Earth)—representing order, etiquette, and restraint. In
contrast, the red of winterberry symbolizes the simple, heartfelt wishes of every
individual for a prosperous life. It is a cultural “displacement"—compressing grand
cultural narratives into a daily object. The red of winterberry touches that miniature
armchair; time feels as though it gently paused its stride on that afternoon in
January 2025.
